High Speed Car Crash Augusta County, Virginia

The Virginia State Police is investigating a high speed crash in Augusta County that left two dead.  On Monday, August 30, at approximately 9:30 p.m. a 2013 Ford Focus was traveling at a high rate of speed on Route 340 when it struck head-on a 2011 Honda Pilot making a left turn onto Kindig Road.  After the collision, the Focus ran off the road and overturned several times before coming to a stop.

The State Police is investigating the possibility that the driver of the Ford Focus was racing another vehicle at the time of the crash.  The driver of the Honda Passport was transported to Augusta Medical Center with serious injuries.

High Speed Car Accident Damages

The injuries that occur from high speed car accidents can be devastating. The severity of the injuries is often directly related to the speed of the vehicles at the time of the crash. Usually, crashes that happen at much lower speeds will cause far less serious injuries.  In addition to bodily injuries, high speed car accidents also cause substantially more property damage.

Most Avoidable Type of Car Accident

High speed car accidents can easily be classified as one of the most avoidable types of vehicle accidents. Both Virginia and West Virginia rules of the road are passed to keep drivers safe.  Part of that safety equation is speed.  Slower speeds usually equal fewer accidents and less serious injuries.

High Speed Car Accident Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) excessive speed killed 9,478 people in 2019.

Clearly, speeding endangers not only the life of the speeder but also the lives of everyone else on the road around them.

Why Drivers Drive So Fast

Speeding is a form of aggressive driving. Drivers who speed may display other aggressive driving characteristics too.

Some reasons drivers give for speeding include:

  • becoming angry in congested traffic
  • running late for work or other engagements
  • simply having a disregard for others and the law
